Unit Trusts and Open Ended Investment Companies Collective Investments
Unit trusts and Open Ended Investment Companies (OEICs) are types of collective investments. In a collective investment, each individual investment is pooled with every other individual investment and then invested as a whole by the manager of the investment.
Different unit trust and OEIC funds invest in different asset classes – shares, bonds, cash and property. Some funds focus on just one asset class, while others invest in two or more. Irrespective of the asset class or classes they invest in, most fund managers will hold a wide spread of investments in their chosen asset class. That is one of the reasons why unit trusts and OEICs are popular with investors spreading investments across a range of businesses can help reduce a funds volatility and the risks for its investors.
Although unit trusts and OEICs are both open-ended investments, where the size of the fund varies according to market supply and demand, there are a number of key differences between the two types of funds.
Investors in unit trusts buy and sell a portion of the total fund in the form of units. The price unit holders initially pay for units (the bid price) is higher than the price they can sell the units for (the offer price): the difference between the two prices is known as the spread. In order for unit holders to make a return on their investment, the closing bid price must always be higher than the opening offer price. An OEIC fund on the other hand, does not trade in units but issues shares to its investors and is therefore an investment company – a less complex entity than a unit trust. Shares in an OEIC have a single price, which is determined by the value of the fund’s underlying investments. All shares in an OEIC are bought and sold at one single price, so theres no bid/offer spread to take into account.
The value of an investment in a unit trust or OEIC will vary according to the total value of the fund, which is determined by the performance of the investments the fund manager makes. Unit trusts and OEICs usually impose an up-front charge and annual management fees, some of which are declared as a percentage of the investment, while others are built into the price.
New ecommerce entrepreneurs can find them confused and confounded by the tax and accounting requirements of their venture. And thats a shame: If someones spotted a great new category and successfully built a web presence, heck, that someone shouldnt find themselves bogged down with the accounting minutia. The entrepreneur should focus on increasing traffic, expanding margins, and growing cash profits.
With that in mind, I offer up the following tax and accounting tips:
Tip #1: Dont Incorporate
A true corporationwhether a C corporation or an S corporationsaddles your business with more complicated tax accounting and a bunch of state filing requirements. You dont want to deal with this redtapeor at least not until youre profitable.
Instead, operate your business as a sole proprietorship. If youre concerned about legal liability protection, note that you can setup a one-owner limited liability company, or LLC. A one owner LLC is treated as a sole proprietorship for income tax purposes.
Tip #2: Start Your Business Before Making Investments
Expenditures you make before youre actually in business-in other words, before youve got a business license and before youre selling or trying to sell your stuffarent very deductible.
Specifically, you can probably deduct the first $5,000 of these expenses. But any amounts in excess of the $5,000 must be amortized over the next fifteen years.
What this means is that you want to start your business before you start spending money on advertising, training, web development, accountants and lawyers and so on.
Tip #3: Automate Your Bookkeeping & Accounting
By lawand some people dont know thisyoure required to maintain an accounting system that lets you clearly measure your income. As a practical matter, this means you need to use a product like Quicken or QuickBooks.
But you ought to go one better than simply using desktop accounting software. Make sure that youre taking advantage of online banking and bill payment features which integrate your accounting system with your banking. As much as is possible, for example, you want to be able to move money from PayPal to your bank to QuickBooks simply by typing a few keys or clicking your mouse a few times.
Tip #4: Hire a Payroll Service Before Hiring Employees
Many successful ecommerce business owners can run their operations without employees. And if thats true for you, hey, congratulations. If and when you do need employees, however, dont try to handle the payroll yourself. Oursource the payroll to one of the large payroll service bureaus like ADP, Payroll, or QuickBooks.
These services are expensive. Figure $1000 to $2000 per year. But the services let you avoid the bookkeeping nightmare called payroll and prevent you from getting into payroll tax trouble.
Tip #5: Consider S Corporation Status After Youre Profitable
Ive written and talked much about how S corporations save taxpayers money and how the right way to set up an S corporation is first create a limited liability company and then ask the IRS to treat the LLC as an S corporation for tax purposes.
In the financial markets, there are several investment instruments that one can pursue. Times have changed and the capital driven markets have increased in popularity in recent years. Its of essence to note that the majority of these investment instruments normally have some correlations with the market data such as sector indexes, currency prices, and commodity prices. Out of the investment opportunities available out there, foreign exchange trading and commodities trading are considered to be the most risky.
The foreign exchange market is more volatile than the commodities market. Generally, the movements witnessed in the moving averages and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is larger in the forex market than in the commodities market. This is to say that the level of trading activity in the commodities market is not as much as in the forex market. A trader risking 30 pips in the forex market is likely to experience loss faster when the trade goes against his or her expectations.
The risk of trading in the commodities market is lower because the daily movement of prices does not tend to be much. For example, in a day, the price of gold may move by about 1-10 pips. Therefore, losing 10 pips or gaining the same amount of pips is not very risky. Lets take an example of EUR/USD currency pair in the forex market: the pair usually moves by about 50-150 pips per day. Thus, this increases the level of risk a trader is exposed to.
The movement of currencies in the foreign exchange market is determined by several factors, chief of which is the economic health of the country a particular currency represents. At one time a currency may be depreciating in value because of the release of some poor economic data, and moments later, the same currency may start appreciating because of some impressive data. As such, success in the forex market requires someone with an active personality who can stay up-to-date with the events in the world. On the other hand, the movement of commodities is not influenced by such many factors; therefore the risk of investing in them is much lower.
To this end, it goes without saying that investment in the foreign exchange market is riskier than investment in the commodities market. Apart from its many benefits, investment in the foreign exchange market is a considered to be a more risky choice of trading.
Conspiracy theorists say that the world is ruled by a single shadowy organization. They say that the banks are owned by this group, and they can manipulate the global economy to further their own selfish goals or to control rival groups that can threaten them should they ever get too big. Regardless of whether you want to be a part of some group’s world-domination plot or are just someone who wants to work in the finance industry, there are a lot of reasons to take up a job in banking.
The first is that it is one of the simplest jobs in finance. Financial advisors, consultants, and the like are known to make really big bucks but they often also struggle dealing with a lot of stress. Imagine having to look at sheets upon sheets of paper filled with numbers and trying to figure out why the business is plummeting, and fix it. Some who have a knack for it consider it a challenge but if you want to fulfill your ambitions at a later time, then banking is the perfect place to start.
The second reason to take up a job in banking is the good working environment. Bank employees have relatively lower stress levels compared to others in the finance sector. Happy workers equals happy working environment.
Another good reason to work in a bank is the job security. Banks withstand financial crises, and employees seldom get laid off unless they did something they weren’t supposed to do. Should there be another economic depression, god forbid, working at a bank won’t affect you that much.
Banks also have fixed schedules. Some banks only open on weekdays. Others open on Saturdays. No banks open on Sundays. This at least guarantees you a day off. At any rate, most bank schedules are only 8-5 and you are rarely kept in the office after-hours. This is also another reason why the working environment in banks is really pleasant.
The final reason you’ll want to work at a bank is you’ll want to be associated with a big name. You seldom hear a “lowly” bank teller calling himself such, as even a teller is proud to be working in the bank. A bank’s name is a trusted one. If you state that you’ve worked for a particular bank, then that trust is reflected on you as well. This isn’t to say you should go work for a bank so you can put something on your resume. When you get a banking job, stay there as for as long as you can as the rewards you reap will be based off of it.
Are you considering moving your banking to an online business bank? For many business owners, this will be a very good move! It means that you will have access to your banking information from anywhere. This is increasingly important since so much business takes place online to begin with, and so many companies have complex relationships with international partners. No longer can businesses be confined to dealing with banks in their local area that require you to stand in line, take a number, and fill out reams and reams of forms to accomplish the most simple task! By contrast, your online bank offers freedom and convenience.
Some people are concerned about the technology and security issues involved in an online business bank. In truth, there is not as much to worry about as alarmists would have you believe. As with anything, there are some basic, proper precautions that you should take to ensure that your information remains safe. When you are accessing your bank information online, you should use a web browser with a high level of encryption. “Encryption” represents the level of security that makes your data unreadable by hackers when you are on the internet. You should also change your banking password fairly frequently.
One of the most convenient aspects of an online business bank is the ability to deal with some kinds of transactions using your phone. Your phone or other “smart” device will be able to access your banking information from anywhere! But many people have some anxiety about using a wireless device to access their bank. To ensure that your information remains safe from scammers, always be sure to access your bank in a safe environment, over an encrypted connection. (When you are on wireless, an “encrypted” connection is the kind that requires a password.) Do not access your bank from internet cafes, and limit use in hotels and airports.
Millions of people are abandoning the traditional, old fashioned model of what a bank should be and embracing the online business bank. This kind of bank is truly the future of the financial world. Likewise, there is nothing to worry about in terms of safety and security when you deal with a reputable bank online. Like so many others, you will quickly find that the speed and ease of use outweigh any concerns.
In a bank job, a person needs to deal with transaction of large amounts of money, which does not belong to him, so the person needs to have qualities like honesty and sincerity. A candidate who wants to get recruited in banks should be good with mathematics, should have sound knowledge about computers, be adaptive to different challenges and environments and should always be ready to put extra efforts on demand. This just doesnt mean that you would have to stay back in the bank for the whole night or something. Its about maintaining a perfect balance between your personal life, family and work.
Most banks look for efficient candidates. The Recruitment programs like South Indian Bank Recruitment 2013 want its future employees to have the will power to handle work pressure. If you go through the bank exam papers carefully, you should mark the fact that there are huge loads of questions that needs to be answered in comparatively less time. These exams not only judge the ability of the people appearing for the exams they also test their presence of mind, competitive nature and the zeal to give the best of performance even under pressure. None who panics by looking at the number of questions may be able to solve more of them.
Before appearing for a particular bank interview a person is advised to study about the banks history – how it could expand and what is the strategy behind its growth. Understanding these facts about the bank increases the probability of getting selected in personal interviews. Just go through the previous papers and mark the pattern. See which kind of questions you cant solve. This way, one can easily overcome ones shortcoming and will be able to crack recruitment exams. A periodic revision is also very important for people who want to crack bank exams. So never dare to ignore revision. One more important thing is that attitude matters. You might have cleared the written exam, but the interview and group discussion panel might reject you if you dont have the right professional attitude. Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Recruitment 2013 looks for this quality in a candidate.
When IBPS came into the scenario, many questions were asked regarding the effectiveness of a common written examination pattern. Overcoming each of these questions, IBPS Recruitment 2013 has become one of the most challenging exams in India. This exam has different sections and to be IBPS certified, a person needs to get a minimum score in all these sections. It is compulsory to attend all the sections but a person should concentrate more in a section, which he is best at, be it the English section, reasoning etc. It is important to remember that every second matters when a person is appearing for IBPS exam. Therefore proper management of time can take you one step forward. When a person gets good score in IPBS examination, he will be eligible for most of the bank recruitment programs.
NFIB and WIA to Provide Better Protection for Wine Investors
Millions of Britons enjoy drinking it and many now see it as a long-term investment. Unfortunately, fine wine has also become a focus for fraudsters who trick investors into buying wines or vineyards that bear little resemblance to what they see in the prospectus, or may not even exist. The increasing number of such rorts in Britain has led to calls for action to be taken to protect investors and to increase consumer confidence in fine wines. In the upshot, the UKs National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) is joining forces with the newly-formed Wine Investment Association (WIA) to tackle the problem.
On 14 February 2013, the NFIB and the WIA jointly announced the launch of the new self-regulatory body which will aim to transform the growing wine investment industry by providing better protection for investors in the UK. The WIA has been formed by leading figures from the fine wine investment industry and seeks to support the sector’s growth through voluntary regulation, establishing best practices and setting up processes to identify fraudulent activity.
Director of the NFIB, Det. Supt. Dave Clark, said: “Fraudsters will always follow the money, wine investment is just the latest in a long line of investment opportunities that are being exploited and corrupted to the detriment of the industry as a whole. He added that the NFIB sees the creation of an auditable framework of self-regulation as a step towards maintaining and increasing consumer confidence, while also identifying investment companies which do not operate in accordance with the required high standards.
New Code to Tackle Wine Investment Frauds
Following an extensive consultation period, the WIA has set out the standards and procedures with which its members must comply to remain in good standing. Under the new code of conduct to be drawn up, wine investment firms will undergo stringent audits by accountancy firm Mazars. These will include checks on systems such as stock rotation and to make sure that purchase orders and invoices tally. The director of the WIA, Peter Shakeshaft, revealed that companies which successfully complete the independent audit process commissioned by the newly-formed regulatory body will bear a WIA logo offering consumers a trustworthy safety kitemark. Shakeshaft added: Our industry has been held back far too long by unscrupulous practitioners and issues around fraud. The WIA will really hold the industry to account.
Money Laundering is a big topic these days in Foreign Exchange circles. The criminal or terrorist element is almost certainly participating in that high tech world. You have probably heard or read of somebody being arrested for this recently.
Money laundering is the process a criminal uses to distance themselves from the proceeds of their crime, yet maintain access to the funds. Most basically, a criminal attempts to take enough steps with the money that it is untraceable to the crime.
Laundering generally takes three distinct stages:
* Placement: Smurfers are used to introduce the dirty money into the system, these smurfers change the form of the money numerous times until the launderer feels the original funds cannot be traced back to them.
* Layering: Layering involves the changing of cash into drafts, money orders, traveler’s checks etc. Launderers ensure each transaction is under reporting laws; so many smaller transactions are made instead of fewer large transactions. This way each transaction looks legitimate and no paper trail is created.
* Integration: Once the money has changed form several times, the launderer has buried the trail of its origination. At this point it is impossible to trace the funds back to the original crime. The launderer is now able to introduce the funds back into use, often through a front company.
Reputable currency traders are concerned about money laundering. Being non-bank Financial Services Companies, makes currency traders susceptible to money launderers. Involvement in money laundering can result in fines, criminal charges, loss of reputation and loss of business to the currency trader. In some cases where the money laundering is for terrorism purposes, the results can be catastrophic.
How do currency traders prevent money laundering? Without going into too much detail, reputable currency traders will get to know you very well before proceding to set up an account or allowing any transactions to take place. Traders will also get to know your beneficiaries very well. The whole process is designed to eliminate any doubt about who is involved in any transactions and what they are transacting.
The good news is that much of what currency traders will ask you is designed to protect your interest as well. If you are doing business with someone in a foreign country, you want to make sure you are going to get paid for your goods or services. You also want to make sure that the foreign business actually exists as claimed. And you also want to make sure the foreign business has a bank account in good standing. These are all things the currency trader will guarantee for you.
